Curbed – On the Racked: Acne Moving Into Eastern Columbia, Huge Modernica Sale, Rebecca Minkoff Sample Sale

2013.05_modernica.jpgDOWNTOWN: As if the Urban Outfitters rehab of the old Rialto Theatre wasn’t enough, here’s some more DTLA action courtesy of Acne. The cult-cool Swedish retailer will move into Downtown’s Eastern Columbia Building this fall, complete with an in-store cafe. Covering more than 5,000 square feet, this will be Acne’s largest store ever.

DOWNTOWN: Modernica‘s highly-anticipated factory sale is going down on May 18. Held at the home decor boutique’s DTLA facilities, the event will feature up to 70 percent off on mid-century modern pieces for home and garden.

HOLLYWOOD: Fan favorite Rebecca Minkoff starts a giant sample sale at Confederacy on Monday. Clothes, handbags, shoes, and accessories will be up to 75 percent off; there’ll also be 25 percent off men’s clothes storewide.

CITYWIDE: It’s Shoe Week over at Racked. As a service to anyone with damaged footwear, they’ve rounded up seven really good cobblers and provided a rundown of how much each charges for basic repairs and services like boot stretching and heel shortening.

VENICE: Mona Moore boutique owner Lisa Bush sat down with Racked to talk shop. Topics covered include her favorite pair of Rodarte heels and why she originally decided to settle on Abbot Kinney.

ONLINE: Here’s a new trailer for The Bling Ring, Sofia Coppola’s soon-to-debut film that’s going to give Los Angeles teens a really bad name. It opens with the movie’s best line, uttered by Leslie Mann who plays the amazingly blank Valley mother to teen sociopath Nicki (the real-life Alexis Neiers).

MALIBU: Big chain Urban Outfitters has announced its intentions to open a store in Malibu. The retailer has hung a banner signaling its arrival outside the former Charter Communications building at 3806 Cross Creek Road, just down the street from the Malibu Lumber Yard.

MELROSE: Los Angeles residents are being asked to vote on a model to represent our city’s very first Men’s Fashion Week LA. There are 10 contestants and each has filmed a quick video as to why he deserves to win.

INDIO: In anticipation of a second weekend full of music, fringe, and flower headbands, here’s a look at the best outfits from Coachella, round one. Standouts included printed bandeaus, leather harnesses and an appearance by Alexa Chung.

Curbed – On the Racked: Old-Timey Denim in Eagle Rock, Gwyneth’s Family Day at The Grove, 38 Essential LA Shops For Spring

EAGLE ROCK: Racked took a day trip to Eagle Rock to visit the workshop, store, and general HQ of throwback denim brand Rising Sun Co.. Mustachioed founder and designer Mike Hodis has stocked the space with black head sewing machines and plays ’20s and ’30s tunes to add to the old-school vibe. “You walk in and you are part of the experience,” he said.

THE GROVE: Earlier this week, the uber-fit and tan Gwyneth Paltrow paid a visit to The Grove Barnes & Noble for a signing of her new cookbook, It’s All Good. She brought along her children Apple and Moses, as well as husband Chris Martin, who entertained the kids while Paltrow smiled and signed.

Curbed – On the Racked: Equinox Coming to DTLA, A Current Affair Shopping Bonanza, Visiting Jeweler Ariel Gordon’s Studio

DOWNTOWN: Next week, office-goers and loft-dwellers in DTLA are getting their very own, brand spanking new Equinox. The gym chain is hosting an official ribbon cutting at the Bunker Hill compound Wednesday, March 27. Expect rooms full of exercise equipment, a yoga studio, a fitness shop, a juice bar, a spa, and more. Click over for all the renderings.

DOWNTOWN: The vintage peddlers at A Current Affair are once again setting up for a big shopping event. It’s going down tomorrow at a penthouse at DTLA’s Cooper Design Space; there will be more than 40 vendors, making it the biggest A Current Affair to date. Tickets are $ 20 for early admission and $ 10 for general admission.

DOWNTOWN: Racked paid a visit to local jeweler Ariel Gordon‘s Fashion District studio this week and snapped photos of the designer’s desk, inspiration board, and her delicate necklaces, rings, and bracelets. There’s also a Q&A where Gordon reveals her DTLA haunts and her creative process.
